Windows XP Professional with SP2 would be my choice. Most of the bugs are out of it. It is also very stable.

There are 2 ways to go for XP on a new personal system.

1. Retail version.

2. OEM (system builder) version.

You save $100 to $150 if you use the OEM version. However, with the OEM version, you are expected to provide all of your Windows support. If you ever have a Windows issue that you need help from Microsoft to resolve, you will have to pay for that support.

So, it all depends on your level of knowledge of Windows XP.

I use OEM almost all the time for the systems I build up for home and family.
