TAG CLOUDS, BLOCKED SITES, AN EVIL BOSS, AND GWB IMPEACHED

It's been a fun week here in the TechRepublic Community as we geared up
for the U.S. July 4th holiday. On the feature side, we've debuted a new
"tag cloud" to help you track our forums' hottest topics and preferred
tags. On the content side, blocking Web sites, dealing with a
borderline sociopath IT manager, and a just-in-time-for-Independence
Day call for the U.S. President's impeachment have dominated TR's
online discourse. Oh, and everyone's favorite evolution-related thread
has resurfaced. Details below.

As to the tag cloud, savvy Web surfers have seen its like before. In
the upper right corner of the main Discussions page is a feature box
labeled Most Popular Tag. It lists the 20 most commonly used discussion
tags. The tags are displayed in alphabetical order, and their
popularity is denoted by the font size of the tag. Put simply, the
bigger the tag, the more popular. Click on any tag to find the threads,
blogs, links and members who are associated with that topic.

We plan to roll out similar tag clouds for blogs, links and member
profiles in the near future. Let us know what you think of the new
feature--or anything going on in the TechRepublic community--by posting
in this discussion.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JAQUI

If you're looking for a vocal Linux advocate, you've found one in
JAQUI, one of the many outspoken open source technophiles that populate
our Top 100 user rankings. JAQUI's professional biography links to his
own online art gallery, and his TR blog has a very intriguing duck
l'orange recipe. Get to know Jaqui and his many interests by viewing
his complete member profile.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: EMAIL

We know what you're thinking: Should I tag this thread email, or
e-mail? Well, the majority has spoken, and the dash has been dashed.
According to our new Discussion Center tag cloud, the no-dash email tag
is among our most popular, so you should feel confident using it to
keep track of all the threads, members, blogs and links associated with
electronic mail.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

1. HOSTS.TXT NO LONGER FUNCTIONS
Member STONEBS used a Hosts.txt file to log the various Web sites this
member wants Windows to block out, but one day--stop me if you've heard
this one--the darn file stopped working. While the Hosts file itself is
still valid, the Web sites listed within the file are no longer
blocked. See how your fellow TR members diagnosed the problem.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS

1. WHAT TO DO??
Our newest contestant in the "Worst IT Manager Ever" sweepstakes was
nominated by TechRepublic member WAYNE62682. This unreasonable overseer
actually had the audacity to tell our TechRepublic member that he
wasn't entitled to a life, and that if he didn't like it, he could go
work in fast food. Naturally, the TR community had all sorts of things
to say about that, including how WAYNE62682 could fight back. Take a
look.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

1. WHY I'M VOTING FOR GWB TO BE IMPEACHED
TechRepublic member ABSOLUTELY has refined the art of sparking a
political flame war down to its bare essence. "I will not vote for
anybody who I know to support Dubya after this: [Insert link to
inflammatory policy document here]." Two-hundred posts later, and the
party is still going strong. Flame on!

correction...

by Jaqui In reply to Tag clouds, blocked sites ...

it's my wife's art site not mine.
all the art on it is her own original work.
and she contracts for custom artwork on her own.
( ain't nothing wrong with helping her business now is there? )
