What IT wants is wisdom. Is the network healthy? What should I do next to keep it running optimally? But what they monitor is data – speeds and feeds. That’s a problem for many reasons:

1. The enormous volume of data obscures important things.

2. Gleaning understanding from a torrent of raw data requires a highly skilled and experienced network operator.

3. There is simply no way to see actual problems in real-time.

AI can fix this in five distinct ways:

1. Real-time Insights: AI can process and analyze large volumes of network data in real-time, providing immediate insights into network performance and security. This allows for faster responses to emerging issues, minimizing downtime or disruption.

2. Anomaly Detection: AI can recognize what normal network behavior looks like to identify anomalies. These could be sudden changes in traffic patterns, unusual login activity, or uncharacteristic data transfers, which all signal a potential security threat.

3. Automated Analysis: AI can process data from network monitoring tools to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies that indicate a problem. This significantly reduces the time it takes to identify and respond to network issues.

4. Enhanced Security: AI improves network security by identifying and responding more quickly and accurately to threats. 2. As AI-based detectors continue to improve, evaluation criteria for security scanners will shift from accuracy to remediation more and more. While AI can likely help evolve new detectors and new validation techniques, it is likely the issues of AI hallucinations will continue to haunt any efforts to convert finds to real-world change requests.
4. The complexities of automating the remediation path will come into sharper focus. Up until now, tools surfaced a remediation path as more of a “nice to have,” with the best players giving routes to pull requests. As solutions automate more and more with AI or any other route, automation will become a table-stakes conversation.
DevOps Predictions for 2024
1. “Platform Engineering” roles will continue to evolve from “DevOps” titles, This will lead to a reduction in the number of DevOps roles we see posted this next year, as more teams acknowledge that DevOps is a cultural shift rather than something you can hire for.
2. DevOps teams will see more individual contributors focused on security who are not officially on the Security team. Some organizations already call these individuals security champions, which is an informal title/role we will see more teams adopt.
