sometime when I listen to the realplayer or access to IE, I receive a warning message for closing a program as follow:

REALPLAY caused a general protection fault
in module GDI.EXE at 0001:00000004.

I would like to learn what a general protection fault is about? and how to fix it?

Check the page at:

This is one of the best ources for info regarding GPF's and GDI.exe. It says the problem is related to windoes setup and configuration. Good Luck

The best way to guarantee you never get a general protection fault error again is to buy a Macintosh. Seriously I have experienced the same problem about 6 or 8 months ago. General protection fault errors occur when two programs IE and Realplayer try to reach and use the same memory at the same time. I solved the problem by downloading the latest version of Realplayer which I think was 7 at the time and it went away. The other thing I would do is go to microsoft and download the latest Windows Media Player. It is really nice, you don't get and banner surprise downloads (which I think is what causes the error) and microsoft probably doesn't follow me around the web any more than I know realplayer was.

GPFs are most commonly caused by an application overwriting its own memory segments rather than by an application overwriting memmory belonging to another application. when a gpf causes the system to halt an application, the system commonly leaves allocated resources in memmory, causing the system to degenerate. I recomend that you upgrade to win 98se (second edition) and del real player from your computer. than go to real.com and d/l the latest version or purshase the real plus package, which includes, realdownloads, realjukebox plus, realplayer plus. for about $100. Although the basic version of real works well to. hope this works for you and good luck. above taken out of the official guid to windows 98 se by russell borland with john ross

Upgrading to Win98SE almost for sure is a waste of time and money. It actually has more bugs than win98. The first thing I would try is this. Go to Start, Run and then type "msconfig" this brings up a system utility that allows you to turn off various programs that load at startup. UNCHECK the box that load realtray .. there is no reason that portion of the program needs to be in memory all the time (Realplayer will still function exactly the same when started under "start" "programs", or from the desktop shortcut. Are you running IE 5.5 ? It has been found to cause many problems! Lastly it is possible (but very unlikely) that you have a marginal ram strip.
