This week: Top 100 and Top 5 lists

By sMoRTy71 ·
Just wanted to give you all a heads up as to what we're rolling out this week.

1. Top 100 members list
Based on the new Site Activity Meter, we have created a list of the Top 100 members over the past 30 days. If the member has a Profile page, you will be able to click through and learn more about them. In the second phase of this page, we will add the Site Activity Meter to each member so that you can get a better idea of the rankings.

2. Top 100 status on Member Signature
If you are in the Top 100 members list, your ranking will be displayed underneath your activity meter (#56 of Top 100). Clicking the "Top 100" link will take you to the full Top 100 list mentioned above.

3. Top 5 per topic
We will also display the Top 5 most-active members per Discussion Center and Technical Q&A topic. We hope this helps recognize members in each of their areas of expertise. For example, you may not be the most active member overall; however, you can still be the most-active in a topic like "Network Administration."

These enhancements will roll out late Wednesday, so please let us know what you think of them and how we can improve them.

Thanks,
sm

Looking forward to it

Pretty sad eh? I'm actually getting excited over this stuff. I'm such a dork. LOL.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but I'd just like to represent the other end of the spectrum. This will promote "quantity" over "quality". I believe that this was an issue discussed earlier. I'd also like to mention that in my opinion, this is more of a novelty than a promotional move.

Perhaps a fair trial is the best method. I am interested to see how many people catch on to the rating method and the abuse patterns that may arise because of it; hopefully there will be none.

The "best of" list will be a lot of fun in my book. I am anxiously awaiting the results. :)

The meter is more about quantity

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Looking forward to it

I understand your point about quantity and quality. And I agree that the current meter is more about quantity of activity; however, the activities that are factored in are the ones we consider quality activities.

The thinking behind the meter is that it is just one of many criteria that members and readers can use to qualify someone.

Sure, someone could try to post a bunch of junk to boost their meter; however, those tactics will be apparent by the content (quality) of their posts. And because the signature only displays with a member's posts, it would be easy to spot someone who is trying to pad their score.

We are planning on rolling out a lot of other things (after the first of the year) that will help members display the quality of their activity. And when combined with some of the quantitative things like the meter, they should provide a better understanding of each member's skills and interaction.

I too think it will be trail and error

by Oz_Media In reply to This week: Top 100 and To ...

As with anything in life, people will go to extremes to abuse the system.

I was actually discussing screwing with the new ranking meter for fun before the View All Open Questions link was available. Then I was given the backdoor link and the fun was dead.

I look forward to seeing what you guys have come up with, at least you are working proactively to improve and make changes now.

I still think the time frames are a tad short, even taking into account that you don't want to discourage people from going for the top. When you GET to the top, you have to do it all again next month or you will lose 'ranking', where's the motivation in that?

What about people who are actually the best contributors in all areas (certainly not suggesting myself here) that simply don't have as much time as they used to, even though they post less fresuently, they also may post some of the best help but they will not be rated fairly because some Yahoo.com has been on TR 24/7 offering nothing but garbage all over the site?

I think people should be encouraged to support TR and the community for at least 6 months or a year before they have the ability to knock out the top performers.

Then the community gets filled with genuine people who actually want to build a great resource and help others, as it sits now it is seems to be simply a posting game.

It's a rolling 30 day window

by sMoRTy71 In reply to I too think it will be tr ...

Just to clarify, the meter isn't calculated monthly. It is calculated daily and looks at the past 30 days. So it is really a rolling meter rather than one based on calendar months.

In addition, we are going to be adding more and more variables so that no one activity will propel someone to the top.

Right

by Oz_Media In reply to It's a rolling 30 day win ...

Sorry my post did imply a 30 day reset yet I figured it would have to be a rolling scale. But still, the most active and helpful people could lose thier ratings if away temprarily or busy one month, when they return, their answers in Q&A may me ignored due to a low rating compared to someone who knows nothing but has been highly active for the last month or so.

Well the very nature of the beast

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to This week: Top 100 and To ...

Will promote those who have inflated egos to go crazy to get into the top 100 and the higher up the better but over all I think it would be a good idea as there are enough real Peers here to contribute and most will quickly pick up on those who are all for show.

I HAVE AHUGE ISSUE WITH TOP 100 !!!!

by Oz_Media In reply to This week: Top 100 and To ...

Who else would, right?

I have a MAJOR problem with the top 100 list. There are MANY people who do not have an active (clickable) alias in order to view their profile. Now I KNOW some of these uys REALLY deserve to be where they are but et the alias active or you can't play.

I don't care if they want to acept peer mail, although it SHOULD be expected of top rated participants, but at least have it so you can click anyone's name and at least see their profile.

WOOHOO!!! Top FIVE, baby!

Ahem. Pardon me while I do a dance. This is funny. I rather suspected there would be more of you higher up on that scale than me.

Sorry. :) I agree with apotheon. I didn't even think that I would be in the top 100. The fact that I am so high up on the meter disturbs me.

Well I wouldn't say I'm 'disturbed'

by Oz_Media In reply to numero 3.... boo-yaka!!!

Though many would say I am, you guys have been going at it like rabbits on viagra, based on the 30 day scale, it should show you in the top.

My point isn't position but the LACK of TOP 100 members that do not offer contact info or even a profile link. If the CONTACT button is what decides whether your alias is a LINK or not, it needs to be changed. I don't care if people don't want contact outside of the forums, but you should be able to view the profile by clicking their alias.

As for you guys, well yes the 30 day scale is working for you, but people like Maxwell have been here longer than me, have worked countless hours helping people and aquired immense amounts of points. He is shown as joining AFTER me and is ranked evenly with me.

Sure it works for encouraging new users but I think it will kill off former die-hard TR peers.

No I am not suggesting Max is gonna leave at all, I simply used him as an example of many.
