Throwing Down Another Gauntlet: Correct use of Usability / User Friendly'

By The 'G-Man.' ·
I?m tired of reading posts / blogs that try to compare Windows to Linux in terms of usability where the actual term usability is completely ignored if favour of whatever the author wants usability to be.

Let? s get this straight, usability is a form of metric testing related to interface design and so when comparisons are being dome I expect to see metric testing and not a bunch of this app, that app chat.

So, please do it right or just don?t bother to do it at all!!!

Metric sources?

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Throwing Down Another Gau ...

Any suggestions for existing measurements, or tools to measure with?

This has always struck me as varying from person to person, but I'd be delighted to hear from an efficiency engineer or functional designer.

So, who's going to sponsor this?

by NickNielsen In reply to Throwing Down Another Gau ...

MS isn't going to do it?there's a strong possibility some Linux distributions may actually be more usable than Windows.

The Linux community probably won't?they've got better things to do with their money.

Any doctoral candidates out there interested in picking this one up?

More usable?

by NexS In reply to So, who's going to sponso ...

That is a strange thing to say.
As long as the machine the OS is installed on responds to user input, the OS will be usable (able to be used). The word 'Usable' needs to be married with an aspect or function required for specific purposes.

"Usability" cannot be used as a vague term.

Indeed so

but that is exactly what is happening in another forum on this very site!

Probably

Why I haven't joined the chorus. Also, I don't have much to say about Linux as I'm not adept enough at all.
