To Defragment or Not that is the ?

By rosierain ·
I have read conflicting articles on the subject of defragmenting your hard drive, One report says not to use this tool more than twice a year, or you will cause wear & tear on your drive causing it to fail. Then Ive read another report that says the complete oppsite . To defrag often to keep your drive healthy! Which is it, or is it just a matter of opinion ?

To Defragment or Not that is the ?

Where in the world did you find the article about "wearing out" your hard drive? I'd like to read it.
The common wisdom is to Defrag on a regular basis. Not every hour, but every couple of weeks, once a month, or whenever your dealing with unusual situations like large print jobs or graphic programs.
If you'd like a real discussion, ask if you should leave your PC on all the time, or turn it off. One of the arguments I've heard about not shutting it down is "It will break the On/Off switch." (:')

Actually I apoligize . I went back and read the article , which FYI was in the Q&A of Smart Computig August Vol12 iss.8 The answer states that defragmenting to often can cause some sort of corruption of files to occur. In there defense they stated dont worry about significantly affecting your drive in terms of wear & tear . However they do say defragmenting more than twice a year is probably more than necessary !

I too, would like to read that article
To defrag every two week to a month will help keep the files and programs that are used frequently to put in the same sectors on the drive and not be placed in different areas,so that they can be accessed more quickly.
Have not worn out a hard drive yet by defragging.
