tracing e-mail

By adolan2 ·
I was sent an e-mail which sarcastically thanked me for sending them a virus, which they caught. I do not know the person nor did I send them an e-mail or a virus. How did they get my e-mail address as the sender? And how can I stop it from happening again?

tracing e-mail

There are a few viruses out there that take a random e-mail address from the infected PCs address book, and use it as the sent from address in the infecting e-mails they send out.

It is also possible that some database that has your e-mail address was hacked or infected.

Unless the person sent you, or is willing and able to send you the original e-mail, there is very little that you can do to track where the original infected e-mail came from.

As a last thought, have you updated your virus scanner, and scanned your PC?

Ask them to send you the headers of the offending e-mail.

Explain to them that to your knowledge you did not send them a virus but would be more than happy to ivestigate this further.

Also tell them, that it is possible that it was klez or a variant that can send as an innocent person.

If they send you the headers, post them to the TR and we will be more than happy to explain them to you.

Important, the headers of the e-mail *MUST* come from the original infected e-mail on the original machine. They can not be read if the e-mail is forwarded. You will only see the forwared e-mails headers.
