Tracing email messgaes

By jhahn ·
I need to trace email messages that are not getting to their destination, we use MS Exchage 6.5. Is there a tool that can trace the path of an email message even if the message does not reach its destination?

I assume you mean Exchange v5.5.

Are you wanting to track messages within the Exchange system or between your Exchange system and the Internet?

For internal tracking, you can use the message tracking function in Exchange. To enable it, fromExchange Administrator, select Configuration, then double-click on MTA Site Configuration and check the appropriate box on the General tab.

To use it, from the Exchange Administrator, click Tools, then Message Tracking. You can then follow the mail from server to server although you will lose the path at the point it enters the Internet Mail Connector.

I don't have a good answer for SMTP tracking so I hope someone else will jump in.

Using Exchange the only way I can think of to trace your message is to look in your DNS table for the MX record of the site you want to trace (EX. mx02.mindspring.com) Open your command prompt and do a tracert mx02.mindspring.com This will let youknow where mail is failing if it is.

Good Luck!
