Transferrable Votes? hey Aussie members!!

By Jaqui ·
The dimbulbs in the B.C. Elections Ministry are telling us that Australia has the "transferable Vote" concept implemented.

What do you think about the concept that some dim wit can change your vote while counting ballots, cause they think your opinion doesn't matter?
[ transferable votes means EXACTLY that ]

For those members that haven't a clue what I'm talking about:
http://stv.ca/

a whole website devoted to promoting the death of democracy.

edit to add:

and it's erection day here, where we have to vote on government and if to change to the transferable vote thing.

I looked at the explanation at Wikipedia

by NotSoChiGuy In reply to Transferrable Votes? hey ...

This makes the logic of the electoral college (win the biggest 13 or so states by a single vote each...lose the remaining 30+ by the millions, you still win) seem downright solid by comparison.

That said, if someone could offer some first hand accounts of how this works, I'd be very much interested in reading them.

once in a while da gubernment allows da peons an erection day.

"...some dim wit can change your vote while counting ballots..."

I'm holding my opinion on the pros and cons of such a system until you enlighten me on how this dim wit is changing my vote.

did you

by Jaqui In reply to Question.

look at the site I linked to?

it explains how the people counting the ballots get to put your vote to a different candidate, based on who is winning or losing in the electorial district.

the problem is, as soon as they start shifting ballots, the win / lose ratio is drastically different, and you have no idea who your ballot actually voted for.

so you have no clue who you voted for.

Sorry, I missed that part.

I got the general idea but overlooked that implementation detail. Are you opposed to the entire idea in general, or specifically this particular configuration?

I like the idea of using my vote to rank candidates, particularly in primaries and when multiple seats are available.

In primaries I'd rather have my second choice than someone I'm completely opposed to. This might moderate the tendency of those on the party fringe to dominate the nomination process, only to wind up with a candidate who is unacceptable to the majority of voters in the general election.

In multiple seat elections (school boards, county councils, etc.), I'd rather have my second and third choices than nothing.

But what do I know? I also like being able to vote for 'None of the Above'.

I actually

don't like the entire idea.

unless your number one gets elected, with the vote transfer, you have no idea who you voted for.

They are adding into the mix, you do not have someone representing your area, you have several people representing your region.

The city of Vancouver has had that, it doesn't work. any city councilor is your representative, on paper, but on ballots it's only listing your specific section of the city,[ 5 people to pick from ] not all of them.[ 100 people running ]

that I haven't heard of it. It's that little island south of us that we keep forgetting about.
