Trapping COM ports

By indimulie ·
Could anyone tell me how i can trap info being sent to my com port. Is there a way to do it in VB 6.0. I would like to do a telephone tracking system for my company.
Also how and where i can get a full listing and explanation of windows API's.
Thanx

Trapping COM ports

As far as the question about the API's goes... Try Amazon.com. There are a number of books on the subject. They are all very big and very heavy so I doubt you'll find what you are looking for if you want some kind of file to browse.

Delphi 5 comes with the MS SDK help files that include a file on the API's but it does not include all of them and it does not provide any real explanations.

In general MS wants to charge big-time for this kind of detail by hooking people into their technicalservice agreements.

Get the books, they're good resources and make great reading when you're bored and want to sleep... (I say this because all of them are VERY big and full of code--no plots, no sex, no violence, just code...)

I have a six book set which covers all the important API's but I won't recommend it (not enough examples, and all aimed a C++ programming) since it may sway you from trying others. I only recommend things I like.

Good luck,

Ther is a comm control that comes with VB6.0 you can use to use the com ports.
I dont remember the name of the control, but its named something comm (maybe mscommctl, not sure). Search the MSDN for more.

Are you saying that if some other program is using COM port and you would like to trap it in your program and check what's going on? or you just want to use COM port in your program?

In first case, as COM ports are not shared, one can't trap what is happening if other program is using the COM port.

In the second case, you can use built in control in VB or there are couple of third party ActiveX controls available like Sax Communication control.

If your interest in Telephony Application then please use TAPI SDK (Available on MS site)

Hope this helps...

Regards...

Uday

What you're looking for is hte MSCOMM control. There are articles on the MSDN CDs or MSDN Online (msdn.microsoft.com). Search for "MSCOMM Control". The ocx file is MSCOMM32.OCX
API references at the Windows API guide (www.vbapi.com)
General references at VB Square (www.vbsquare.com) or vbAccelerator (www.vbaccelerator.com - BEWARE the popup windows!!!)
Hope this helps
