Trouble Deleting Games

By JoeCee ·
It was recently brought to my attention that the games (ie. Solitaire) on Windows 2000 were causing a distraction at my workplace. When I attempted to delete Solitaire and the other games out of the C:/WINNT/system32/ directory, they would be sent to the recycling bin, but as soon as I closed explorer, a new copy was placed back where the old one was. I have even tried renaming the files but Windows just puts a new one there. How can I delete the games permanently? I have tried uninstallingwindows components, but when I go to the control panel, the games are not even in there. What do I do?

You do have to remove them from Control Panel / Add/Remove programs.

Make sure that you are logged on as the administrator.

This is from a XP box, but W2K should be about the same.
In add/remove programs, click on Windows Components.
Select Accessories
Click on Details.
The games should show up as an option.
Uncheck the games.
Click OK, and follow through all the way out of the dialog.

That will not help due to the fact that the Games part doesn't show up on the Windows Components screen.

Try this link ...

Remember to remove any spaces in the URL.

Hope this helps.

Use this to display the accessories option Chas talks about if it isn't showing up in the windows components part of add/remove programs.

Just noticed exactly what you were talking about, went into add/remove programs -> windows components and accessories doesn't appear on the list. Did what the article talked about, remvoing "hide" from the game line and the accessutil line and voila, it is now an option.

By default, everything deleted from the command prompt is not placed in the recycle bin. So, first make sure the games files are not hidden then try deleting them from the command prompt.

Already thought of that...and when I am deleting files from the command prompt especially, I always remove the HIDDEN attrib.
