Trouble with home network on XP

    Locked

    by eddie ·

I am having a problem getting two computers to talk to one another on a basic home network. One computer has Win XP Home edition, the other has Win XP Pro. Both computers can ping the gateway and can get to the Internet. The XP Home computer can seeand ping the XP Pro computer but not the other way around. I have tried it with DHCP running the show as well as setting up hard coded TCP/IP info with DHCP disabled. No results. Can someone please help?

First make sure the computer name is unique, the workgroup is identical and file and print sharing are enabled on both. Give more detail if it’s not that simple.

Try this. Go to Network and Dial up connections.
Right click on local area connections.Select properties. Then select internet protocal TCP/IP.
Click on Properties and select Use the following IP address. Type in IP address that you want, Subnet mask and Gateway. Then click Use the following DNS address.
Then under preferred DNS server type your gateway address. Then do this to the other computer making sure that the IP address is different but the subnet mask are the same. Follow what dcosgrove stated as well.

You also have to turn off XP’s built in firewall, otherwise it will block communications from the other machines on your network.
