TR'S HOT TOPIC: DUMBEST USERS OF 2005

Okay, when a member opens an online distress call with the phrase "
Cannot ping myself," you know it's going to be a strange week.
Something tells me that, had the author of that Tech Q&A post
elaborated, it might have made for a great user story, the kind where
dumb users and tech support painfully collide. Of course, if you're the
support tech in question, these situations are nightmares come
true--the kind that must be shared. If you've got a great user story
from 2005, please share it here.

If not, if you guys could just help us name our latest community
feature, that would be great.

Not from 2005 but 1983

by mjd420nova In reply to TR's Hot Topic: Dumbest u ...

A user calls and describes his problem that he
can't boot his IBM PC-AT computer. Upon arrival,
I turn on the power and it goes thru a normal boot until it tries to read from the haed drive.
On the display comes a message that water has been detected in the A: drive and there is where it halts. Naturally there is no floppy in the A:
drive. I stick in my BOOTALL floppy and the
drive spins up accompanied by a gurgling sound,
then a whirring sound and a prompt SPIN DRYING
and then it boots normally. Inspection of the
autoexec.bat file reveals a line DRAIN and the root directory has program called DRAIN. I believe this was my first evidence of a virus
and have no idea where it came from, but believe another user planted this program on the users
drive as a joke. I was able to supress my
laughter but the user was irate. Deleted the
line from the autoexec file and deleteing the drain file returned normal operation.

TR server performance is degrading

by stress junkie In reply to TR's Hot Topic: Dumbest u ...

Of course when I say that the server performance is degrading I don't mean that it is an assault on my dignity or anyone else's dignity. I mean that the server performance is bad and it is getting worse. Whatever is causing the problem is not new. It is just getting worse.
