TR'S HOT TOPICS: CAREER ADVANCEMENT, XP CORRUPTION

It's career season at TechRepublic, the time of year when finding and
doing a better job becomes the primary obsession of a large chunk of
the TR membership. We???ve kicked off the festivities by debating how
to handle the quintessential IT staff problem child, confronting the
industry's gender bias, and smacking down the office suck-up.

In other news: Nothing hurts worse a corrupt Windows XP system profile,
some members can actually support both Windows and Linux, and arguing
about religion never gets old.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TOIVO TALIKKA

Who says you can't support both Windows and Linux? Certainly not world
traveler, 30-year coder and TR member TOIVO TALIKKA, who installs and
runs both operating systems (though his first love is open source) and
manages to guarantee the security of both. Despite all that, he still
finds time to crack the TR Top Ten.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: CAREER

It's autumn in the northern hemisphere, the time of year that every IT
pro's thoughts turn to career advancement. At least, that's the way it
seems recently, what with the current upsurge in usage of the career
tag. Find out how your peers are seeking and finding career success--or
mere relief from office politics--by reading the blogs and discussions
associated with the career tag.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

XP PRO START UP PROBLEM
Here's a tale of file corruption sure to send shivers down any support
tech's spine: Member MSGWEN7 has a Windows XP PC with a damaged system
profile, and no access to the original install CDs. Theories range from
a fried motherboard to a bad hard drive to the most insidious spyware
known to man, but as yet no one has found a way to recover the PC
without paving over all the old data. Try your hand at solving this
tech support nightmare.

HELP MANAGING A VERY BRILLIANT EMPLOYEE
We've all met this frustrating coworker: the IT All Star with all the
talent in the world and nary a social skill to be found. Member
ROBROYNJ has just such a genius on his staff, and unfortunately he
aspires for a management role. See how your fellow TR members suggested
handling a techno-savant with delusions of managerial grandeur.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

DOES RELIGION DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
For those of you keeping score at home, this inexhaustible little flame
war has made the "Too Hot" list four out of the last five weeks, and
been the top off-topic post generator three times. Member JUL646, you
know how to start an argument. If it doesn't cool down, this thread is
on its way past the rarified 1000-post threshold.
