TR's Hot Topics: Comatose admins, A+ backlash, online peace talks

HOT TOPICS: COMATOSE ADMINS, A+ BACKLASH, ONLINE PEACE TALKS, AND A NEW
BLOGS PAGE

Lessons for the week: Never entrust a Windows 2000 domain password to a
single admin, because he might end up in a coma; never underestimate
the power of A+ certification as an excuse for not getting hired; don't
try to hold a peace summit in the TechRepublic forums, because only the
peanut gallery will attend, and Google is pretty popular, as far as
desktop search is concerned.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: GADGETGIRL

If you ever find yourself bogged down by the unique breed of red tape
found within the bureaucratic catacombs of the European Union,
Britain's own GADGETGIRL will be there to commiserate. She describes
herself as "semi-technical, useful for being a translator between
engineers and users, with good working overview of legal UK & EU
statutes." Oh, and there's a definite nautical theme to her blog, so
aqua-philes probably would enjoy a read or two there.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: GOOGLE

Thanks in no small part to the newest version of the Google Desktop,
the google tag is enjoying a spike in popularity, especially on the
blog front. Stay on top of all things Google by using the google tag.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

DOMAIN ADMIN PASSWORD RECOVERY
It sounds like a punchline, but member DATABASE is deadly serious: "I
have inherited a Win2000 Domain (Administrator in a coma for 2 months
and only he knows password). I have used a local password reset
and???got into local admin???but the comatose admin has disabled local
admin from changing domain users' details and passwords. Is there a way
I can reset the Domain Admin Password, or recover it--am at wits end
and do not want to reload a new domain as it has 200 users in!"

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS

TO WORK OR NOT TO WORK IN THE IT/MIS INDUSTRY
Member COMP1SYSTEMS knows she's qualified to work in IT after her six
months of training, but it seems that a variety of employment
prejudices--not the least of which is her lack of an A+
certification--are holding this single mother back. The TR community
had a bit of a field day analyzing this situation and dispensing
advice.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

OZ AND IT_LOBO - WHERE IS THE LOVE??
Once again, a personal feud has threatened to hijack every productive
thread (read: the entire Miscellaneous category) on TechRepublic, so
member DMAMBO is trying to play peacemaker between the warring
factions, OZ_MEDIA and IT_LOBO. Big surprise--the two parties never sat
down at the peace table, but the rest of the TR regulars had a ball
deconstructing the feud in their absence. Online hen-pecking at its
best, so take a look.
