TR'S HOT TOPICS: HURRICANE RECOVERY, REBOOT LOOPS, FLAME WARS

This week's lessons from the TechRepublic community: IT hardware
doesn't shake off a hurricane as easily as IT pros; employees openly
expect IT to clean up their security messes; starting fires (in
discussion forums) is fun; Novell networks and Microsoft PCs don't play
well together; talking religion is a good way to start an argument, but
it's not that easy to stop; and Bob Artner, you will be missed.

Got a comment, question, complaint, or kudos for the TechRepublic
community team? Post it in this discussion.

FIRESTARTER: EMPLOYEES DON'T CARE IF THE BUSINESS FAILS

TechRepublic blogger HUTCHTECH threw out a notion that TR's own TRIVIA
GEEK couldn't resist reposting: "I recently came across [a report]
which claims that employees take more risk on the net at work because
they believe their IT department will protect them. While this might be
what they said in the survey, the real answer is far more sinister:
employees don't care if the business fails."

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BOB ARTNER

BOB ARTNER, TechRepublic VP and one of the Web site's most dominant
influences, unexpectedly passed away last week. His TR peers have put
together this tribute page to commemorate his various contributions to
our site. Many of our members no doubt encountered Bob without
realizing it, either through his "Artner's Law" column, his audiocasts
and whiteboard videos, his hosting of our Roadshow events, or simply
through the direction he gave our editors and staff. His absence will
be felt for a long time to come.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: FIRESTARTER

In the fine tradition of this newsletter's own "Too Hot" listings,
TechRepublic is getting into the flame war business with the
firestarter tag. Rather than react to hot off-topic threads, we're
going to proactively embrace some controversial discussion topics, and
we'll mark each thread with firestarter. If you want to join in the
flamethrowing, just tag your own controversial discussions with the
firestarter tag.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

REBOOT LOOPS
When member TABCOMPUTERS2002's users try to log their Windows XP and
Win2K machines onto a Novell network, the PCs spontaneously reboot.
Even stranger, the problem can only be reproduced at the user stations,
not in a diagnostic lab. See how your TR peers are trying to solve the
reboot loop mystery.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS

DISASTER RECOVERY - HURRICANE
Member AL.PARKER survived Katrina, but not all his client's PCs escaped
harm. He needs "hints to individuals who are trying to recover their
computers/peripherals from water/dirt/pollution damage from hurricanes?
The hardware was recovered, what's next?" He's got about 100
suggestions to choose from; learn or share some additional recovery
tips in this discussion.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

DOES RELIGION DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
It's the flame war that wouldn't die. After a week away from the top
off-topic spot, JUL646's frank and unavoidably inflammatory look at the
pros and cons of organized religion returns. This impassioned debate is
approaching 700 posts and shows no signs of stopping. So much for being
too polite to discuss politics and religion.
