TR'S HOT TOPICS: KATRINA, TECH Q&A PREVIEW, THE 'ENTRY LEVEL' LIE, AND
LAPTOP DEATH

The much-anticipated Technical Q&A revamp is underway, and as a
surprise preview, we're resurfacing an interim version of the long-lost
ALL OPEN QUESTIONS filter for Tech Q&A. This link (which, as a stopgap
measure, is admittedly a little balky at times) will allow you to view
open Q&A questions without navigating into the Q&A categories. You can
also sort against answered vs. unanswered, by date, and by point value.
Tech Q&A enthusiasts, have at it.

Now, on to this week's lessons from the TR community: Your laptop
hardware is going to fail two weeks after the warranty expires; the
phrase "entry level" is very misleading when it comes to IT jobs;
Hurricane Katrina has been dominating even the IT news cycle; and
religion remains a touchy subject, but one that is not immune to
academic analysis.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: RAMON PADILLA, JR.

Believe it or not, there are actually some interesting things to say
about running a public sector IT department, at least to hear CIO-level
bloggerRAMON PADILLA, JR. tell it. When he's not busy writing
TechRepublic's Government IT newsletter, blogging on our site, or
participating in TR discussion threads (what, Tech Q&A not worth your
time, Ramon?), Ramon is plotting his return to the sunny state of
Florida. Assuming he can tear himself away from TR, that is.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: KATRINA

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, several news stories and blogs have
appeared on TechRepublic, documenting the damage and promoting ways to
offer aid and relief to the victims of the disasters. The best way to
stay on top of it all is with the Katrina tag. If you uncover any
additional information on aid or assistance, please be sure to add it
to your TR Links and tag it with Katrina.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

MY LAPTOP'S HARD DRIVE CRASHED
Stop me if you've heard this one: Two weeks after the warranty expired
on member NICSENSEI's Toshiba laptop, he started enjoying the first of
a series of hardware failures. The problem has since escalated to a
full-blown hard drive inaccessibility problem, with a BIOS-level block
against booting from a USB CD-ROM drive. See how NICSENSEI pried
himself out of this laptop mess.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ENTRY-LEVEL AS I REMEMBERED IT?
Member BRAINXPANSION went back to school as a nontraditional student in
the hopes of using an IT degree to boost his career. Unfortunately,
upon graduating he learned the hard way that the term "entry level" is
now code for "at least 3-5 years experience required" and that
"programming skills" means "the ability to diagnose VPN, DNS, and AD
failures based on written descriptions." See how the TR community
helped BRAINXPANSION deal with the new world order of an IT job search.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

DOES RELIGION DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
New week, same top "too hot" discussion. Member JUL646's pro vs. con
foray into the social worth of religion has been the dominant force in
the TR forums for quite a while now. This particular flame war has been
surprisingly academic, with phrases like "dialectical materialism" and
"agnostic relativist" being thrown around with impunity. Grab a seat
and enjoy the show
