TR'S HOT TOPICS: TRACKING LOGINS, SMARTER SECURITY, VPNs

This week's lessons from the TechRepublic community: Graphing the
logged-in state of network PCs is hard to do; contemporary computer
security is six times dumber than we thought; every IT pro has problems
with VPNs; and Ferris Bueller's social studies teacher has fans.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: REXWORLD

Member REXWORLD (also known as TechRepublic project manager
extraordinaire Rex Baldazo) isn't just another blogger with an extreme
fascination for gadgets, he's also an old-school coder with plenty or
curmudgeonly wisdom to share. Plus, he's a science fiction fan, so he's
got that going for him.

TAG, YOU'RE IT: VPN

It says here that pretty much every tech pro in the business has at
some point gotten into trouble with a virtual private network, which
explains why the vpn tag is so ridiculously popular. Grab some VPN
wisdom here.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

MONITOR PC USAGE
Member STERGIOS_NIK is "interested in producing reports that will show
how many [network] PCs are in use (logged on) at a specific point in
time??? If possible we want to display on a Graph for a specific time
interval (i.e. from 21:00 to 21.30) the total number of PCs that were
used (logged) at that specific time interval." Half a dozen product
suggestions later, and you've got one happily resolved question we can
all learn from.

THE SIX DUMBEST IDEAS IN COMPUTER SECURITY
We all know that default permissions is an accident waiting to happen,
and that educating users is a pipe dream, but how many among us think
that the entire antivirus paradigm is going to forever undermine
computer security? Well, apparently JDCLYDE and about 100 other
members, as the "The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security" provoked
more responses from the TR community than we've seen in weeks.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

BEN STEIN IS RIGHT!
Shocking as it may seem, there has apparently been a political
undertone to much of the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, as
evidenced by a commentary from Ben Stein himself. Even more surprising,
this partisan subtext prompted the TR community--particularly member
ProtiusX--to respond in our discussion forums. Two-hundred posts later,
and the 'Does religion do more harm than good?' thread is finally
bumped to second place. Flame on!
