TR's hot topics: Win95 drives, XP uptime, and hot blogs

By Jay Garmon Contributor ·
TECHREPUBLIC COMMUNITY NETNOTE NEWSLETTER for August 16, 2005

HOT TOPICS: WIN95 DRIVES, XP UPTIME, POLITICAL DEPORTATION, AND HOT
BLOGS

This week's lessons from the TechRepublic community: Never test a new
hard drive with an old Windows 95 application, be careful when trying
to determine uptime under Windows XP, and don't try to deport a
controversial political activist while OZ_MEDIA is on watch.

Other than that, it's been a slow week in the TR forums. Apparently,
the Windows vs. Linux debates are starting to die down, and nobody
cares who won. The usual suspects have cropped up in the off-topic
threads. Oh, and we've outed the new man in charge of TechRepublic.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: PETER.SPANDE

TechRepublic, meet PETER.SPANDE (rhymes with Tandy), the new head
honcho of your favorite tech Web site. According to his profile, Pete
currently has no interests and is using no technology (cut him a break,
he's new), but he does write a mean blog. Oh, and what he thinks will
greatly shape the near-constant changes going on at TechRepublic, so
he's a man worth listening (and speaking) to.

Wondering what these "blogs" are everyone keeps babbling about? Well,
the BLOGS tag has your answers, culling together a TR community
consensus about blogging, blogs worth reading, and even blogs about
blogs. If you read, write, catalogue, or contemplate blogs in any form,
the BLOGS tag is here for you.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE TECHNICAL Q&A QUESTIONS

CAN SEE DRIVE, BUT NO DATA/FOLDERS?
TR member BBUSBEE seems to have broken a 60-gig Maxtor hard drive???by
testing it with an old Windows 95 machine. It's not that the drive
doesn't work, just that it can only find 8 gigs of accessible space.
Our old-school tech experts are still chewing on this little mystery.

LAST WEEK'S MOST ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS

TRACKING DOWN UPTIME IN WINDOWS XP
TR contributor Greg Schultz wrote a quick tip on determining how long
it's been since your WinXP PC was rebooted. It took member JFS-TR about
five seconds to punch holes in the method. 140 posts later, and you
have one of the most animated TR article discussions of all time.

"TOO HOT FOR TR"

The following discussions were sufficiently non-technical or
controversial to be suppressed from TechRepublic's Hot and New
Discussions lists.

CLUELESS IN SEATTLE
Everyone's favorite flamethrower OZ_MEDIA opens with this quote: "US
police in Seattle asked Vancouver police to arrest political party
leader and marijuana activist Marc Emery for extradition to the USA."
So that's drugs, politics, antiterrorism, and international relations,
all in the first sentence. We'll be shocked if this thread doesn't hit
300 posts.
