type of cable to use???

By vdawson ·
O.K., Here goes...I set up a network using a DSL modem that runds into my router/print server....which runs to my switch which I have wired to my PC's. All work now fine, BUT the building has prewired CAT5/RJ45 outlets in the offices, and I want to use that. But with the old users left they just cut the incoming cables to the computer room. SO MY QUESTION IS THIS what type of end do I use to go into the switch ( straight or crossover)?? AND what type of cable do I use to go from the wall outletto the PC??? thanks !!

You need to look at how the jacks are wired at the other end of the cables to determine how to proceed.

Then, are you going to wire the cables to jacks in a patch bay, or install connectors and go directly to your switch?

You need to configurethe wireing at the switch so that you end up with straight through connections at the PCs.

If I'm thinking this through correctly, you want to match the jack wireing at both ends of the cable. Then straight patch cables will work on both ends.
You can start by wireing a single cable, and pinging it with your cable tester.
