unable to download using IE6

By johnk320 ·
I've struggled with this for a couple of months now. I hope someone can help.

When I try to download anything from any site I get the following error message:

Internet Explorer [ver6] cannot download filename from filesite. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I have checked Internet security settings (as per MSKnowledgebase) and other IE6 and network settings. I am using WinXP Home, on a 2GHz, 256MB RAM, cable access thru a LinkSys 10/100 switch and router. Yes, I have taken the switch and router out of the loop and directly connected this computer to the cable modem and I get the same results.

Points will be awarded for a successful reply.

did this used to work fine and then this problem came up?
here's 2 cents:
try internet explorer repair
try latest service packs for (you dont' mention which ver of) OS and IE6.
Turn off all firewalls for test.
if you used to have firewall software installed and you've uninstalled it, visit mfg website to see if this is known issue
download and install netscape and see if you have the same problem

If I could download netscape I wouldn't have posted this. The point is, I can't download anything.

Which ms kb did you find regarding this ?
I found this one.;en-us;183506
kb 182506

sometimes a downloadmanager can corrupt this, if you have any uninstall them, also p2p networks.
use www.lavasoft.cpm to check if there is no rest of any spyware on your machine, and after those steps, try to repair IE (via add/remove programs) and/or install IE 6 sp1.

I think you meant a reply with a provides a solution, every reply to an answer is succesfull by definition. doesn't mean nessary that's its meaningfull or helpfull.

I'm guessing you have reinstalled Internet Explorer, and any service packs or bug fixes on the website?

A clean reinstall can work miracles.

Did not uninstall IE6 but did uninstall an update that came with one of the automatic updates and that solved the problem. When I did the next automatic update, that same patch was reinstalled and the same problem occurs. I wonder if anyone else had experienced this.

This problem still persists. I downloaded netscape from another source and use that for downloading.
