Unable to open Excel 2003 files with Excel 2007

By Clifford Francis ·
My OS is Vista and I have Office 2007 on my laptop.
I am unable to open Excel 2003 files directly by clicking on it. I do not get any error messages. The icon for opening just rolls for sometime and then fades out(meaning unable to open the file).
I then have to start Excel 2007 and click the open icon and then browse and open the Excel 2003 file I want, which is very cumbersome.
I do not face this issue in word and powerpoint where I can easily open earlier version files directly.
Please help!
Regards,
Clifford

Un-associate file type or repair office

by BizIntelligence In reply to Ignore other applications

You can un-associate or remove the xls or xlsx file type from MS Excel and then receate the file type. Please follow following link:

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/231/1/An-utility-to-unassociate-file-types-in-Windows-Vista.html

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-create-new-file-type-association-in-windows-vista/

Also, check for third party antivirus software and disable it for a while. Try then.

You can also try repairing office if that helps.

Cheers !

Just for curcuriosity

by BizIntelligence In reply to Unable to open Excel 2003 ...

Did you upgrade from office 2003 to office 2007? Do you still have office 2003 installed?

try this and let me know the results...

Open excel 2003 document in excel 2007 (by opening it within excel) and then save it in docx format. Try to open it. I believe it should work. If there are few files then you can do it every time you open 2003 file. Office 2003 users surely can open docx using converter.

If possible also check if you have any template or file under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART

If yes, then please move it to temp folder then try opening again (by double clicking 2003 file).

Also, try this.
(Note: I didn't have that option visible in Excel 2003. it could be due to service pack 3.)
Open 2003 file in excel 2003 then go to Tools > Options > General > check the box
instantly using double click in Explorer.
For above solution, you may need to have office 2003 and office 2007 both on your laptop...

Cheers !

You should remove office 2003 and office 2007 from your computer as you has got both offices installed (2003 not working). You should install only office 2007 and then try it.
