unable to open link to snapshot file in sharepoint

Although I can activate the link and reach the file, it will not let me open it.I get security message which says that the file type is not recognized or it is corrupt. I can open the snapshot directly outside of sharepoint. The .snp file type is not on the blocked list in sharepoint.
