I realise I have probably been stupid but I have an Outlook (2000) archive file of 2076320kb and when I try to open it, I get the message "Properties for this service must be defined prior to use." On clicking OK, a dialog opens saying "Errors have been detected in the file C:\My Documents\Outlook Files\archive.pst. Quit all mail enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair Tool." When I use Scanpst it runs OK to stage 4 of 8 (which it completes) and then a dialog opens: "Scanpst: This program has perfromed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists contact ..... etc." I am now stuck and don't know how to get the archived emails, notes etc back. Can anyone help me to recover the file or parts of it please? Thanks, John

ScanPST will only be helpful in recovering/ repairing the pst file withing 2GB limit, try copying the same archive.pst to some other fast processor pc, & run scanpst from there. Hope fully you will get your data upto 2GB back.
Illegal operations is caused due to corruption in the OS or MS Office not in PST file.
I have also run into the message "Properties for this service must be defined prior to use." when access to the file is read-only. Please remember that to open a .PST file, you must have Read/Write access.
The repair tool (scanpst.exe) is not designed to fix pst files over the size limit. You will need to use a different tool, the crop tool. See this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;296088 you will lose some of the data, but it's the only way I know of to get any data at all out of it.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
