Unable to remove old Exchange 5.5

By anthony.kok ·
I have actually 2 domains, A is a NT domain and B is an AD domain. Domain A have a Exchange 5.5 and Domain B have a Exchange 2003. Both domain are trusted. What I did was I installed Exchange 2003 as fresh install. Without any co-existence of Exchange 5.5. I managed to migrate all the users using ADMT 2.0 and migrate the mailbox using ExMerge.

Problem now is that I can't shut down the old Exchange 5.5. When I shut down, certain users will have problem accessing their emails or hung their outlook client. Logging into their mailbox using OWA was fine.

I have checked the replication in the old and new Exchange server but there isn't any and when I use Exchange Admin from the 5.5, I can't see the new 2003 and vice versa. Have also checked the ADC but nothing inside. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Look at the settings for the client and see which servers they are connecting to. Maybe the outlook client has not updated teh target server. Why not reset the client to pooint to the right server manualy.

Also, does the 5.5 server run any other service?

All the clients are pointed to the new Exchange 2003. There is no other sevice running in the old exchange. Just plain Exchange 5.5 and antivirus software running that's all

Check who is running the master browser for your network. It might be the exchange 5.5 server that is running the master browser. Make sure that there will be another server taking over the browsing role.

Are there any public folders still on the 5.5?

Try disabling the 5.5 and reconfigure your client to use the 2003 server.

It's quite hard for me to check who is the master browser as I have around 100+ users. The Exchange 2003 itself is already a master browser. There are public folders in the 5.5 but I have checked there is no replication from the 5.5 to 2003 and from 2003 to 5.5.

I can't stop the 5.5 cos if I stop it, some clients Outlook would hang

Check if they have any in the "open additional mailboxes" that points to a mailbox on the 5.5.

We had the same problem before. But it was for an old domain controller. When we shut it off, people cant find the exchange server. It was a browsing issue. The server was the master browser and when we enabled another server to take over, everything was fine.

Is the 5.5 and the 2003 on the same subnet? browsing cant be routed. is the 5.5 in the same subnet as the users that cant connect, but the others who can connect are in a different subnet?

What version of outlook are you using?
