Unable to run SETUP.EXE to install software

By aseoane ·
I am unable to run SETUP.EXE to install software on a Win2K with administrator rights. I double click on the SETUP.EXE to start installation and the hour glass comes up as it was running and then the installation just stops. Nothing else happens after that. This only happens when I try to install programs that require to run SETUP.EXE, but it does not happen with *.msi files.

Try renaming %systemroot%\windows\system32\obeaut32.dll to obeaut32.old. Then relpace the .dll with a copy from a working maching.

I couldn't not find obeaut32.dll in the machine where I am experiencing the problem, and I couldn't find in any computer running OK.

1. Watch Task Manager processes when you run SETUP are they executing then terminating or just hanging? Maybe some other process is causing the problem. Close as many processes as possible and retry.

2. There are group policy settings that can prevent SETUP.EXE running, disable any group policies and retry. Check local policy for any restrictions.

3. Upgrade Windows Installer from Microsoft downloads site.

I have occassionally seen this problem. Ususally shutting down the McAfee Viruscan/Vshieled allows the setup to continue.

Not sure if you are running a viruscan or what type, but if you are try shutting it dowmn in Control Panel first.
