Unable to upgrade XP Home(SP2) to XP Pro

By sarah.ramsden ·
I have purchased an XP Pro upgrade CD BUT, when I try to upgrade my new PC which came with XP Home SP2 pre-installed, I get an error "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD"

You will either have to roll back Home to SP1 or earlier or you will need to load your Pro disk, slipstreaming SP 2. For more information on how to do the latter:

The slipstreaming technique worked really well. Thanks for your help.

Just encounteresd that myself and it reaal shows how ignorant Microsoft programmers are anymore. The normal person would consider it an upgrade going from XPHome to XPPro no matter what the service pack was. Not M$!
Since you probably only have a XP HomeSP2 disk for your computer (As I did) you will have to take your upgrade CD back and get the XP Pro SP2 upgrade. My store let me do that and it is available.
Sorry my M$ rant for the week.

First and foremost never purchase an upgrade. Always buy the full OEM or whatever version for your system upgrade. You'll have less headaches. The error message you are getting is a valid one. One question, why are you upgrading from XP home SP2 to XP pro SP2? Home version is fine for home use and you can share internet using ICF. XP pro is great for use in a DOMAIN and has many security feature to stop wondering users from screwing up a computer at a business. Good luck.
