Unable to write to the Registry

By Trainer ·
WARNING! Install Aborted -- Unable to write to the registry. you may require administrator privliges to complete the installation.

This is the warning/error message I get when trying to update the ROMBIOS of a 28.8 modem (to 56K) inside of a Compaq Armada 7792. I have complete administrator privliges on my local machine. I recently rebuilt this laptop and I was able to install everything including the update. I then logged into the domain (which I think caused the problem). I uninstalled the modem shooting a related trouble. I reinstalled the modem, whiched worked, then tried to reinstall the update. Did'nt work! I have already figured out it is NOT a policy.

Please explain as well as give me a fix. Thank You, Trainer

Most likely your domain ID doesn't have an admin right on your workstation. You need to login to your workstation, run User Manager and and your domain ID to a local admin group.

Unable to write to the Registry

From your description, I assume you are running NT Workstation. I would double-check the permissions on the registry directory (c:\winnt\repair) and on the files in that directory and make sure that they permit access by an administrator, not just a domain administrator.

It is a little curious to me that you would have to re-do a ROMBIOS upgrade - those are generally a one-shot deal. However, the other piece of information I could offer is that during some upgrades on Compaq equipment I have had a similar problem that was solved by a power-off reboot just prior to doing the BIOS upgrade.

Hope something in this wandering narrative helps you isolate and solve the problem.

Unable to write to the Registry

Hi,

I think the error caused by a damage dll which is in charge of writing to Registry. To make sure this, you may open registry and make changes manually, save it. If you can do then what I have said may be right. Try to reinstall the operating system. It would save time rather than looking for the fault dll.

Good luck,
