Unidata VS. Oracle

We are considering a Vendor who uses Unidata OR Oracle. Unidata is their preferred choice. How major of a project would it be to start with Unidata and then switch to Oracle? (We hear rumblings that Unidata could be phased out – is THAT even closeto being true?)
