Unified communications (UC) describes a communications system that comprises an extensive range of applications and technologies that have been designed, sold and supported as a single communications platform.

As such, the basic idea behind UC is to amalgamate all the tools needed by an organisation’s employees to seamlessly interact either internally with their co-workers or externally with customers through a central user interface.

Listed below are a few common components of a typical unified communications system:

Text-based communication (email, SMS, chat)

Voice applications (telephone calls, audio conferencing, voice mails)

Video services (video conferencing, telepresence)

Social media

Web conferencing (virtual meeting rooms, interactive whiteboards)

Collaboration (file sharing, screen sharing, joint workspaces)

An increasing number of organisations today adopt what is called ‘enterprise unified communications’ to transform how their employees collaborate with each other.
