Uninstalling Linux Partition

By steve.doig ·
G'Day,

I'm running Win98 with a Linux partition. I have LILO installed in the MBR.
I deleted the linux partitions without doing anything about LILO, causing LILO to partially boot, displaying LI only. I can't get into windows at all, even though its the default boot option.

How do I remove LILO from the MBR?

I have booted from an old win95 HDD, but it won't recognise the win98 partitions on the original HDD. Is this because of fat32?

Thanks for some help.

Cheers,

Steve.

Boot up in Windows 95 from diskette and run this command:

fdisk /mbr

This will remove LILO without damaging anything.

Best of luck!

Use a Win98 Bootdisk and boot up using it, and do a FDISK /MBR, and it will restore a Windows Master Boot Record. If you want to take off the Linux partition, use FDISK again and delete that partition, and recreate it to whatever partition you want (i.e. DOS for a Windows partition). The reason you cant see your Win98 partition from Win95 is probably because your Win98 partition is FAT32, which the first version of Win95 (OSR1) could not see, it can only see FAT16 partitions. I hope this helps you out.
