To really assist here, we need to know the "flavor" of 'nix you want to run. For example, just off the top of my head I know of Linux, SCO, BSD, AIX, FreeBSD, OSX, DecUnix/True Unix64/OSF, Irix, HP-UX, NetBSD, Solaris, SunOS, Ultrix, etc, etc, etc.
Let us know what it is you want to use and we can point you to where you can purchase it economically (or in several cases, free).

Check Bull Systems
http://www.bull.com/

We have redundant Bull Servers running a Public Safety System, that must be up 24X7, under AIX 4.3.0.0 We almost never bring the system down for anything other than upgrades.

These particualar boxes have been in since 12/23/97.

We had a problem with a memory board and the first replacement for it within 3 mos. of installation. We have had 8mm tape drive go bad and one hard drive went bad. The tape 8mm tape drive was replaced with a DLT 8000 Tapelibrary and we have had no problem with it. The harddrive was hot swappable and we did not have to go down for that.

Bull's Hardware and OS support is outstanding. When we call in a problem they do not call back within 2 hours, as many support groups do. They transfer us directly to a support rep. And their support reps are REALLY good.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
twatkins@ci.tuscaloosa.al.us or 205-349-0590 0830-1700 CST.

Good Luck!
