UNIX to Win98 via FTP: How to keep same

By mcseJason ·
Sending a text file from UNIX to Win98 PC.
Name of the file: text.txt
Windows ADDS this: text.txt.~1~
So now when we do it again, the file does not get overwritten, it writes a new file: text.txt.~2~
This is concerning because the HD will fill up after a month of doing this.
How can we get Windows to stop adding the ".tilde # tilde"?

UNIX to Win98 via FTP: How to keep same

by Lo In reply to UNIX to Win98 via FTP: Ho ...

Hi - I neither a UNIX nor Win98 but two solutions come to mind from what limited I have with FTP

1) If the Win98 appears to want a.a.a in this process, then send it text.txt.snd.

2) after you ftp the file to Win98, use FTP and rename the file to whatever you want, text.txt~1~ text.txt.

I don't have access to a UNIX or Win98 to test this or I would before writing this. Let me know if either (both) work.

Thanks for your help - the problem was in the Kermit95 program (before the ftp transfer).

What FTP program are you using? None of the ones I am aware of do any automatic file renaming. Also, if all else fails, you can specify both the source and destination file names explicitly in a put or get. I don't remember the exact syntax, but if you type help from the FTP command line, you should be able to find it (or from the man pages on the UNIX server).

Turns out it was not the ftp program - it was the Kermit95 program before sending it via ftp. Thanks for your help!

UNIX to Win98 via FTP: How to keep same

I found the problem!
Oddly enough, Kermit95 was the culprit. On the Transfer tab in the configuration there is an option regarding "filename collision".
The default is "Backup".
It needs to be "Overwrite".

Thanks for your help!
