Unmountable Boot Volume

By eraser3498 ·
I recently install windows XP home with SP1A and I get a unmountable boot volume error when windowsx is about to load. Here's what I've tried: Changing the ide cables, tried a different good harddrive, tested my harddrive,x swapped my memory, used the recovery console and used chkdsk /p and fixboot and chkdsk /r this worked until I power down then the error came back as well as just about everything else you could think of I'm out of ideas short of replacing my motherboard (GA-7ZM bios FFc). Bios and windows are both fully updated as well. If anyone has some new ideas I could try to fix tis problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Since it came up correctly after doing fixboot and such, have you used a virus scanner to check the hard drive for critters that can nuke your boot sector?

The only other thing I can think of is checking that your bios supports the size of drive that you are using.

This is a common XP problem, try this:
1. Put in your WinXP cd (make sure your cd-rom is the first boot device in the bios)
2. When you get to the welcome to windows setup screen where it lists your options such as install, upgrade, recover (hit the r key)
3. Once you do this a old style DOS screen will open. Type in chkdsk /p
4. Once this completes type fixboot
5. Then you might be asked a confirmation question: type y or yes
6. Then type exit and hit enter, windows will reboot problem should be solved.
ETC. If for some odd reason this didn't work replace chkdsk/p with chkdsk /f.
