Unrecognized CR-ROM

By rcurtist ·
My parents bought an old HP Legend 18GD for the grandkids to play games on. It looks like someone reformatted the hard drive and I cannot get Windows 95 to reload. I cannot get the system to recognize the CD-ROM. I have tried a new CD-ROM drive, loading the drivers and still no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

What WIN95 Version are you trying to load, which may be in conflict with the version that is on the machine
Try using a Win98 startup disk and boot the computer, generic cd drivers are on the disk, choose to run setup with out cd-rom support at the command prompt type in fdisk /mbr
The option to format using format sys:C,to be determined if the version you are loading will support Fat32
When the files have finished transfering reboot the computer with the Win95 startup disk in A:\drive and run setup with cd-rom support.
Hopefully this will help.

Are you able to start to load Windows

Have you got a windows boot disk, if so can you read from the CDrom drive.

I would presume that you dont have a windows boot disk and this is why you are having the problems.

If you require 1 get in touch

Is this a HP Legend HD or a HP Legend PC or both?
It sounds like the drive was not reformatted, but ratther it had a secure erase done to it to eliminate sensitive corporate data.
This is both common and recommended for certain used PCs.
Since you have changed the CDROM, you obviously can open the case.
Check the Hard Drive. If it is from a large manufacturer, (WD,Seagate, Maxtor, etc.) download the free Disk Utility from the manufacturer, and zero fill the drive.
This is starting from zero (literally), but it will insure a clean install.
After the zero fill, do the normal boot on the Win95 floppy, partition and format the drive.
Make sure to remember to copy the drivers for the CDROM to the floppy, plus the statements in CONFIG.SYS, and AUTOEXEC.BAT. for the drivers.
The WIN95 CD should now load properly.
Regards, Chris
