Up against a Firewall

by nixer . Updated 23 years, 7 months ago

I need some pointers on implementing a firewall if someone could spare their expertise i would appreciate it. I am still a beginner in the field and could use some tips.

I am trying to implement a home firewall on a seperate pc. I am using a product called smoothwall GPL. My first problem is that I can only access the administration pages (through a browser) using the ip address. it’s not wokring for me when i use the name of the box and port number, which it should do.

When i do use theip address to get to the pages I attempted to upload firmware for my Alctel DSL modem at first with no luck. Eventually I moved the NIC from one slot to the next and ureka! it worked.

Am I supposed to configure something on my Windows pc to makeit work correctly with firewall? Is it a prolem that I am not able to use the box name? I could really use some tips.

The firewall box is an old NEC READY 9733 i am not positive about the hardware configuration i.e. amount of MEM and thing like that.

Thanks for any help…
