Upgrade Outlook Express 5 to 6

By cojoneswa ·
I recently had a client who purchased two new computers and they came with XP and Outlook Express 6.0. I got stumped in trying to move her old folders and emails to the new machine. Manufacturer can back with recommendation that I had already tried. Outlook Express 6.0 has import options, but it seems to skip Outlook Express 5 as an option. Any words or wisdom?

Go into Outlook Express 5 and export the entire mailbox (with subfolders) as a .pst file then simply import that into IE 6.0

Good luck, hope this helps.

I simply copy the entire folder with the OE mail files onto a CD-RW, and then use the import function of OE to retrieve them from the CD.

Just search for the .dbx files to find the folder for each OE identity.

Whether its OE 5 or 6 here is an easy approach to backup or restore the data.

Lets say that you have 2 PCs installed with OE.
PC1 with OE5 & PC2 with OE6.

PC1
----

1.Open OE. go to Tools > Options >Maintenance > Store Folder. Copy the path and paste them into the explorer bar.

"C..............microsoft\outlook express"

Paste only the path till Microsoft, so that you can see the Outlook express folder. Now copy that outlook express folder and write into a CD or copy it into PC2 if the PCs are networked.

PC2
----

Open OE. Go to Tools > Options >Maintenance > Store Folder. Copy the path and paste them into the explorer bar.Paste only till Microsoft. there also you can see a Outlook express folder. Rename that to outlook express1 or any name you like.

paste the folder that we copied from PC1. Close and open OE..everything will there as you had in the new system.

And don't forget to export&Import the Address. :)

Best of Luck!

Regards

Rony
