Upgrading a DNS server from 4.0 to W2K

By oneil_brown ·
What is the best practice to upgrade a NT 4.0 DNS server to W2K. Same question for SMS 2.0. I understand that W2K has the intellimirror, is that going to replace SMS all together?

Haven't done DNS yet so I can't help you, though I expect upgrading the server would be pretty straight forward. I have read that intellimirror is just for haveing apps installed and keeping them working. SMS can do more on the install side and provides reporting functions.

There are no particular additional steps to upgrade an NT4 DNS server to a Win2K. Win2K is not meant to replace SMS as it does not provide any hardware inventory functionality. Through group policies you have the option, however, to deploy applications through assignment to computers or users by OUs (organizational units) or domains or sites. The main difference between NT4 DNS and Win2K DNS is that Win2k DNS supports SRV records, which will provide you with the ability to have dynamic updates or integrate your DNS zones into active directory zone.
