Upgrading from microsoft exchange 2000 to 2003

I would like to know how to i upgrade from Microsoft exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003. But i want to run this in a test inviroment first , so that would include the active directory and all the users that are on it .
has anyone done this before and what are the steps that i would need to follow in order for this project to be a success .
