UPN not showing upon file access

By jack.dorsey ·
Greetings All,

I have a new issue that I've not experienced in 8 years of systems engineering, and I think I know what is wrong but I'm not 100% positive.

I have a relatively new user (2 months old) who I setup from scratch without copying from another user. When the new user, we'll call him "Bob," opens an Excel document that is shared on the network and another user tries to open that file, the user that tried to open the file gets the standard "locked for editing by X" message. Well, normally the "X" would say "Bob," or whatever Bob's display name is set to in Active Directory. Not in this case. In this case, "X" is represented by the name of the domain controller (where the file resides). It's not showing the FQDN of the DC, just the display name of the DC.

This is very odd behavior and it only happens with this new user. I've checked all his AD settings and no fields contain the name of the DC anywhere.

I have to believe that this has something to do with the new user's SID, although I'm not 100% convinced yet and before I go tearing into NTDSutil I thought I might try here first to see if anyone smarter or more experienced than I had run across this before.

Domain is 2003; forest at full functionality. Please let me know if I can provide anything else you might find useful for resolutions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance provided!

Cheers, Jack
