I have a dell inspiron laptop 1420 running Windows Vista Ultimate.
To work on the laptop I generally plug in a usb keyboard and mouse and sometimes plug in my blackberry to charge.
The problem is that if I don’t boot the system with these devices connected, it won’t see them or respond to them. For example, if I have to go to a meeting, and I unplug the devices to go to that meeting, the only way I can get them back is to reboot my whole system, which is a MAJOR pain in the butt.
I have checked and I have the latest version of the bios. The device manager says all devices are working properly. How do I get Vista to “see” a device connected to a USB port other than on boot. Whatever happened to “Plug N’ Play”? I could do exactly what I am talking about on my old dell laptop running XP, but not on Vista!!
Any help (other than telling me to reboot) would be much appreciated. As far as the system can tell all the USB drivers are up-to-date as well…
