User profiles on and off network

    Locked

    by wormfarmer ·

I am a problem with laptops. We used to run Win95, and have changed over to NT. I want the laptop to use the same profile when connected to the network and when standalone. On the server, I pointed the user profile to the folder on the laptop, and I also explicitly pointed the user profile on the laptop to the laptop folder.

I end up with two user profiles on the laptop, one called “user” and one called “user.000”. I have been unable to find anything at Microsoft about these, and they don’t seem to synchronize. My users are loosing e-mails between being on the network and being standalone.

    Any help would be appreciated.

When they logon offline are they still logging on to the domain (using cached settings) or are they logging on to the laptop using the local workstation.
To test logon offline and make sure you logon with userid/domain-name/password. its the domain-name that I think maybe casuing the problem.
If they are logging on to the W/S then as far as NT is concerned they are two different people with the same name.

My suggestion would be to not use roaming profiles for laptop users. This way they would use a local profile (on the laptop) whether they were logged onto the network or not.

Assuming you are using outlook98..When you install outlook98, the installation will as you if you travel with this laptop answer “YES”. When you are connected to the network tell outlook98 to synchronize with the server so you have all you email in your local HD.
