Verbal Agreement over rental fee?

by hyphy . Updated 19 years, 8 months ago

A few months ago I decided on moving out of my place, even though this was a breach of our 1 year lease. All my room mates, the new room mate who would be taking my place, and myself went to the management office to see what there is to sign and pay. The management said there would be an application processing fee for all the room mates who would be living there and some sort of moving out fee. I agreed that since I was moving out I would pay for the current room mates’ application fees and any other fee that would fall upon them regarding my move.

Flash forward to present day, the management has said that they are waiving all the fees except for the “room mate change fee”. To me that means when a room mate is moving in, that initiates the “room mate change”. However, one of my past room mates is now arguing that this is a fee I should pay for fully because it wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t move.

Now he is talking that he wants to take me to small claims court because he recalled me saying I would pay for whatever fees fell upon them. Truly, there are no fees upon them; this is between me and the new room mate. Should I be responsible for this fee at all? I believe not, but maybe I’m wrong?
