I run Veritas BackupExec-8.6 on a W2K/SP3 server with Dell PowerVault-128LTO (2 HP drives) attached via Adaptecs 39160 SCSI adapter. All drivers for 39160, HP drives in the PowerVault and library (20 media changer) are current, for Veritas I think that the really important patches are installed (?).
Backup works fine (though a bloody message always tells me that library security were compromised, ?), I backup the local server data and also data on 3 other servers over the network.
The data are NTFS files, exchange server and sql server data.
For each day of the week I use 2 backup jobs (so that both drives work simultanously), and every job is defined with the changer as target and with separate and well defined media set. Each media set has its assigned media, there is no overwrite protection at all. Normally there are 2 media in the changer, on holidays or when the operator is absent there may be 4 or 6… .
Problem: When the backup job starts, it does not alway take the medium from the assigned media set, but take the “wrong” one (from a different media set than defined for this job). Alle media have unique ID?s from their bar code. When this happened and I manually move the medium back into its original set, the problem may arize again one week later.
Who can tell me something about the mystery of media, media sets and libraries like this one?
