Veritas VolMgr or Sun Solstice Disksuite

Veritas has better performance and configurability, but depending on your needs DiskSuite may be good enough. If DiskSuite is good enough it is free so that is why you would wnat to use it. DiskSuite is also becoming a lot more like Veritas. DiskSuite is better for managing boot devices (The /, /usr and /var file systems). It is much easier to undo a mirror configuration from DiskSuite by using the Solaris install CD if your server fails and you need to try to get back to something that boots and recover your data. It is much more complicated with Veritas and sometimes impossible. I would definitely recommend doing /, /usr and /var with DiskSuite. As for the data file systems if DiskSuite gives you everything you need use it, otherwise pay for Veritas. Veritas offers a lot of extra features that may interest you. There are too many to discuss here, but you should research their web site. Good luck. If you want to send an email to my alias I'll forward you some white papers I have from Veritas. I use both products in my company. Each one has its place.

In addition to volume manager, Veritas provides a suite of programs that work VERY well together. The Veritas File system (VxFS) provides the ability to grow and shrink logical partitions (volumes). It also provides a "snapshot" mode where a view of the file system is frozen in time even though the file system is in use and changing.

The other big difference between Veritas and Disk Suite is that veritas will create logical partitions that are not tied to physical partition size. Disk suite wants to use partitions as the base for their logical devices, so the devices you create will be limited to the number of partitions you have available.

Both work well.

Since Solaris 8 there are very few difference between Veritas and Solstice, The major difference is when you are choosing which to use for the root disk. Veritas encapsulates the root disk drive. This makes recovering the system complicated. If Something goes wrong using Solstice you can simply remove the entries for solstice from the vfstab and boot to the original partion. With Solstice you have the snapshot functionality using fssnap. The cost of Veritas isn't justified for a software raid. When Solstice does everything Veritas does. If you are looking for performance by a hardware raid.
