    Locked

    by hillbillyhaven1 ·

I use Windows XP ,MSIE 6 Sp.1, Runtime Java VRM. How do I find out the amount of VM , and how to changr the VR? I also would like to know how much Hard drive space is used and make room by discarding useless files. Can someone help me with my VR andhard drive query ? I have disk fragmented. I haven’t moved things around on the hard drive to make things run better. if you can give me some info. on any way to make my programs run better via Java VM,and Ram hard drive space I would really appreciate it so much. To find out amount of VM. Click start, click on control panel, click on Performance and Maintenance then system. Goto the advanced tab and click on settings under Performance. Click on advanced again and at the bottom is the VM settings. For anybeginner I recommend checking the button for System managed size. Custom if you know what you are doing and no page file if you have 512mb of RAM or more.

For HD space click start and then click on My Computer. It will show the total amount of HD space and how much is being used.

To make things run better I recommend partitioning your HD into at least 2 partitions. C:\ drive holds the operating system and the 2nd partition holds applications. Also check out an XP tweak site like http://www.tweakxp.com/ to help further.

      Hope this helps.

Looking at my XP Pro system, you check virtual memory from System Properties.

      Start
      Settings
      Control Panel
      System
      Click on the advanced tab
      Click on Performance
      Review the virtual memory settings.
      Click on change if desired.

My current ‘minimum’ recommendations for virtual memory settings are:
The larger of 2X Installed RAM
      or, 1GB – Installed RAM

The more open windows and programs, the larger a virtual memory field you need.

As to RAM, for XP, I recommend a minimum of 256MB. Preferably, you will have more.
I recommend as much as the motherboard / your budget can handle.

In XP, you can run the disk de-fragment utility from Administrative tools, Computer Management, Disk Management

For all versions of Windows, you can safely delete the following:
C:\Windows\Temp Any file more than 2 weeks old
From IE, you can clear your temporary Internet files (Cache)
It can also speed things up to delete most of the links in the recent files folder under your user profile
      C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Recent

Two other things can cause this….

If it happening when using Word then close Word then go Start choose Search and look for Normal.dot and rename it Normal.old Now restart Word this recreares the corrupt template.

      or

Go to this website http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm#All Now go Start and then Run type in

      msconfig

and hit OK. Choose the Startup tab and using the lists on the web page untick anything Not Required.
