virus scan and windows xp

Everytime I open a document or program using Microsoft office, the computer runs a virus scan on EACH document. I have to leave multiple docs open while working because the computer basically stops while the scan runs.

Help. How do I stop the virus scan. I have disabled Norton antivirus, but no help.
