What file format are the legal documents in?
When you open A: drive (using My Computer in WinXP) and you see the files listed, do they have a file extension listed, i.e. FILENAME.DOC ???
What kind of icon is listed with each file? Is is a genericWindows icon (a black outline with a flying Windows logo it it), or is it some other icon?

If you do not see any file extensions listed when you open My Computer then A: drive, right click on one of the files and choose Properties.
On the General tab, you will see the full name of the file, including the file extension. What is that extension?

Basically, the files are probably in a file format that the computer you are using does not know of. Perhaps they are WordPerfect files, and you don't have a copy of WordPerfect installed.

hope this helps

Can you install the software package that you used to read the files before?

What is the extension of the files on the floppy?

If you used "Paper-Port" to scan and store the documents, you will need to install "Paper-Port on the new PC.
You do NOT need the scanner driver to run the program to view your documents.
You may need to get a newer version, or upgrade the version you have.
