VLAN Implementation

By Andy Pandy ·
I am looking at setting 3-4 Vlans on our current network but first need to find out all of the implications of changing.
We currently have 50 users but will soon have over 100.The network at present is split into two 40/10 (two differant companies)being split by a 3com office firewall.
Our network (40 users) are running active directory, exchange obviously dhcp and dns.
We would like to to create 3-4 vlans, what are the options of configuring the whole network with one dhcp server, dns and using active directory and all our current services. The reason for creating the vlans in the first place is to seperate differant departments and reduce broadcast traffic over the whole network, but would still like to manage everyone through A.D. and other management tools.
We will be purchasing a 12 port layer 3 switch at the core at 1000 mbps connecting up to 6-7 servers and will purchase another 6 24 port 10/100 mbps switches at the edge for desktops.
Providing a 1000 Mbps backbone.
Possibly creating another VLAN for just the servers.
As this is the first time at implementing a vlan would like advice and any things to consider before we 'Jump in'
Any help would be much appreciated.

Andy
